Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): A Small Business Guide
Generative Engine Optimization — GEO — is the new discipline of getting your business cited inside the answers AI engines write for your customers. It builds on SEO, but the rules are different. This guide walks through what GEO is, why it matters for small businesses, and the seven moves that get you mentioned.
What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website, content, and off-site citations so that generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews — quote you accurately when they answer customer questions. The term was coined in a 2023 research paper from Princeton and Georgia Tech, and has since been adopted by authoritative business publishers including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as the natural successor discipline to SEO.
GEO vs SEO — what changed
SEO got you ten blue links and asked the user to pick. GEO gets your business named inside one synthesized paragraph. The shift changes what matters:
- Facts over phrases. Models extract claims, not keywords.
- Citations over backlinks. A mention in a trusted publication is worth more than ten generic links.
- Identity over ranking. The engine needs to be confident you are the right business before it names you.
- Answer shape over long-form. Pages that lead with a clean answer get quoted; pages that bury the lede get skipped.
Why GEO favors small businesses
AI engines reward specificity. A national brand's homepage is too generic to quote on a local or niche question, but a small business with a clear category, location, and a few well-written answers can outrank Fortune 500 sites inside an AI answer. GEO is the rare channel where being small is an advantage — if you actually do the work.
1. Earn authoritative citations
Generative engines weight third-party mentions more heavily than classic backlinks. A single quote in an industry publication, a government or .edu listing, or a trusted directory does more for your GEO than dozens of low-quality links.
- Get listed on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, your state SBDC, and the top trade association for your category.
- Pitch one specific, useful angle per quarter to a publication your customers actually read.
- Publish original data — even a 50-respondent survey — and offer it to journalists.
- Collect reviews on Google, Trustpilot, and the platform that matters in your industry.
2. Mark up your facts with structured data
Schema.org JSON-LD is how you hand machines a clean fact sheet. For GEO, the must-have blocks are:
- Organization or LocalBusiness on the homepage — name, URL, logo, address, phone, sameAs links.
- FAQPage on any page that answers customer questions.
- Article on guides and posts, with a named author and datePublished.
- Product or Service on offer pages, with price and availability.
- BreadcrumbList on deeper routes.
Validate every block with Google's Rich Results Test. A broken schema is worse than no schema.
3. Write in answer shape
"Answer shape" means the structure AI engines can lift cleanly into their output. For every important page:
- Open with a one-sentence direct answer to the page's main question.
- Phrase H2s the way customers ask things ("How much does X cost?", "Who is X for?").
- Give concrete numbers, names, and timeframes — vague claims get filtered out.
- Close with a 3–5 question FAQ block and matching FAQPage schema.
- Keep your business name, category, and one-line description identical to your schema and Google Business Profile.
4. Measure your GEO performance
Pick 10 buying-intent questions a customer might ask. Run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews once a month. Log:
- Mention rate — how often your business is named.
- Position — first, middle, or last in the answer.
- Accuracy — does the model describe you correctly?
- Source — which of your pages (or which third-party citation) the engine quoted.
Inaccurate mentions are the fastest wins: fix the underlying page or schema and models usually update within weeks.
